The sun has finally set. The shadows are no more. Darkness has fallen upon the world as the chaos of the day has faded to the chaos of night.
In the darkness questions are asked and thoughts are pondered. With Jon Foreman’s third installment of his The Wonderlands project, Darkness, brings seven songs to accompany the night time hours.
“Come Home” is the opening track on this EP. It’s a beautiful song, musically and lyrically, about finding your heart and coming home to yourself. One of my favorite lines takes place in the chorus. “If this is the meaning of life, you were born for the dance not the fight.” I’ll let each of you interpret that line however you wish. As a closing note to this song, I love the middle instrumental section as well.
The second track is titled, “Beautiful Pt. II.” The beauty and power in the beginning of this song is striking (in a positive way). Then, suddenly, everything quiets down and becomes much softer. While listening to this track, I began thinking how gorgeous the description and meaning behind the words were, but that’s not surprising for a Jon Foreman song. It wasn’t until my second listen through that I started to wonder if this song was a follow up to “You Don’t Know How Beautify You Are,” from his Sunlight EP. Both songs focus on the idea of hiding our true feelings as well as our true selves. It states that each of us are beautiful in our own way and we gain that beauty by being ourselves.
“You Alone” produces a happy and uplifting vibe from beginning to end, which I love. This feeling is captured even more by the happy, uplifting and light instrumental section. And I can’t help but smile when listening. So what’s the message derived from this song? Only our creator has the power to heal us from the inside, to heal our soul.
When the piano and violin kick in, “She Said” gains a mystical vibe. I absolutely love the violin as part of the instrumentals and think it give the song as Irish or Scottish feel at times. (Maybe this is a stretch, but I’ve thought it every time.) Either way it’s haunting and beautiful. The words are lovely too. “When the pain feels like a knife, /I’m not letting go tonight,” is only one of the many lovely lines in this song.
“Larger Than Life” is the next track. The thing that strikes first is the odd tempo of the music and vocals. It will probably grow on you, as it did on me. Odd time signature aside, the message behind this song is strong. “You’re larger than life. You’re bigger than what you’ve been.” I’m fairly certain this one line says it all.
The second to last track is titled “June & Johnny.” It’s a sweet little turn that will stick in your head, but what’s extra special about it is that it’s stripped down to nothing but a guitar and vocals. I find that there’s something magical about acoustic songs. And the fact that this is done as a duet fits the songs perfectly. One of the lovely lines in this song, at least in my opinion, is – “I’ll hold you all my life like a memory at the back of my mind.”
Rounding out this EP is “Inner Peace.” This song comes in loud and clear and strong. The truth is that we’re all a mess inside, but we are continuously searching for inner peace. “How can we be ourselves is we don’t know who we are?” I think that line is not only gorgeous, but honest. The whole song possesses a beauty with it’s soft dream-like feel.
So far I think Jon has produced some really great, beautiful and honest songs through this project. Of all the EPs Darkness was the one that blew me away the most. I’m not exactly sure what it was about this one, as each EP has special qualities. Each EP has songs that reach depths I’ve rarely seen in music. They speak to my soul and I appreciate, as well have the utmost respect, for Jon and his music. I suggest giving Sunlight, Shadows, and Darkness a listen.
The last EP is due to be released in October. (And I can’t wait to see what gems are on this one.) So while these daylight, evening and night time hours are being enjoyed, soon the darkness will fade to Dawn.
